TOMS RIVER – A new ordinance was unanimously adopted by the Township Council. Aimed at curbing drug and prostitution activities in local hotels, properties that have been the subject of repeated complaints to the Township can now be labeled as nuisances.
This nuisance designation will place the property onto a probationary list for a year. The owner will then be subject to a $300 fine for each additional call answered by the township Police, Fire or Code Enforcement.
Township departments will be required to keep records on how often they re being sent to these establishments. Upon being cited, property owners will have an opportunity to contest the fines at a municipal hearing.
“Everyone’s got to do their part to address the opiate epidemic and this nuisance ordinance will address it,” Councilman Daniel Rodrick said.
